Affordable Car Batteries - Farmer Autocare

The battery is the powerhouse of your vehicle, without the charge it provides when you turn on the engine you will be going nowhere so, for this reason, properly maintaining a car battery is crucial.

Problems with car batteries are high on the RAC list of 10 most common break down faults, especially in the winter when heaters, headlights and screen demisters drain so much more power from your battery.

With service intervals extended to 10,000 or even 20,000 miles, many owners now use their cars all year round without any attention to the battery and then expect faultless starting in winter. If your car is already displaying symptoms like sluggish starting in cold weather or lights that fade when you switch the heater on, it could be time to replace your battery. But before you make that decision you should take your vehicle to an expert, and of course Farmer Autocare has a team of fully trained experts who will check it for you.

The battery is an important part of winter preparations for any vehicle owner, especially if the it is more than four years old. Even though replacing you battery at some point is unavoidable, there are a number of simple precautions that can be taken to avoid problems in the future.

Above all it is important to keep the battery clean. Dirty or moist surfaces may result in small but continuous leakage currents flowing from one terminal to the other. Over a period of time this can significantly reduce the battery’s cold starting capability. Defective dashboard switches for seemingly low current consumers like the glove compartment light or rear wash/wipe should be rectified before they drain the battery. Also, the condition and tension of the V-belt, connecting the engine to the alternator, should be checked to prevent any slippage.

If you have any doubts at all the team at Farmer Autocare will be happy to help.
