Brakes

It might seem like common sense but many drivers don't give the brakes on their vehicle a second thought, even though they are obviously the most important piece of safety equipment on any vehicle.

The braking system is by its very nature complex and it should be checked by an expert every 10,000 miles or at least once a year and of course the start of winter is a wise time to do it.

We believe that all drivers should be aware of the tell tale signs that the brakes on their vehicle need some attention.

 

Tips

Be aware when you are driving how the car feels when you apply the brakes.

If the brake pedal feels slack or goes almost to the floor before engaging, the system should be checked. It could mean that the brake-fluid level is low or is leaking.

Shaking or vibration in the pedal or steering wheel may indicate that the brake discs are in need of replacement or resurfacing. A squealing sound indicates that the pads are wearing thin.

The sound of grinding or metal-on-metal can be a sign of even more serious problems. Letting that condition continue is likely to ensure that you'll be needing to replace your brake discs as well as your brake pads.

In order to check the handbrake is in good working order pull it on whilst on an incline; if it takes more than a few clicks before the car is securely held, then the cable or rear callipers/drums need to be checked by a professional mechanic.
