Exhausts
We all get used to the way our vehicle sounds when everything is running smoothly so when you hear an odd sound it is best to pay attention.
In many cases the strange new noise will be coming from your exhaust system and that innocent sounding rattle might just be the first sign of a loose exhaust.
If you ignore it, it won't go away and it could get worse, causing damage to the loose section leading to it having to be replaced rather than tightened up.
A low roar or blowing sound is an indication that there is a hole in the exhaust system, this may be caused by corrosion from salt, snow, chemicals and grit picked up in day-to-day driving.
Modern car exhaust systems can contain a number of sensors to help regulate emissions. If they detect anything abnormal, it’s common to see a warning light in the instrument display.
You should be aware if you spot unusual amounts of smoke from the tail end of your exhaust or if the engine sounds rough when it is idling.
So be sure to:
- Listen out for unusual noises coming from your vehicle’s exhaust system
- Pay attention to excessive amounts of exhaust gases from your vehicle’s tailpipe
- Don’t ignore instrument warning lights – it may not necessarily be a major problem but it will still need sorting
